Dear Parents,

The first quarter is ending, so it is time for the second quarter team building!

On Monday, October 2, 2023, the Ash Fork Middle School will hike to Johnson's Tunnel for team building. Construction on Johnson's Tunnel began in 1881, and it is the only railroad tunnel west of Albuquerque. Trains stopped using the tunnel in 1960. Here are some facts about Johnson's Tunnel.

  • A construction camp called Simms existed on the bluff above the tunnel, home to 1,500-3,000 workers.
  • It costs $125 a day to haul water to the tunnel for the workers.
  • The wooden beams of the tunnel roof caught fire in 1898 and were replaced with steel boilerplates.
  • During WWII, the army posted machine gun nests around the tunnel to protect it.

Johnson's Tunnel is an integral part of Ash Fork history, and the middle school team is excited to share a part of our town's history with the middle school.
