As summer approaches we look forward to a change in our routines. Maybe, we will have the opportunity to travel, visit friends and family and experience different schedules. As important as it is to try new things, it is also vital to a child's development to have consistency. Children thrive when they feel safe and are able to predict their routines. This is especially important in our fast moving and often chaotic modern world.

By simply focusing on a few core components of a healthy routine we can set up our children and families for success. The first thing to focus on is a predictable schedule. Start by setting and sticking with appropriate and consistent sleep and wake times. Try to plan meal times, location, and sit down together without the distractions of screens. Use this time to talk and bond. Kids need time for free play and that should definitely be encouraged, but structured play and learning time is also very important. Set times for them to draw, paint, play music, dance and read or write. Practicing anything daily for a short period of time is key to learning new skills. Physical activity and outdoor play with and without friends helps with moods and overall fitness. Finally, doing their part helping out around the house helps them better understand being part of a group and their role as a contributing member of their household. Tie their chores into their daily schedule and praise them for their help and doing an outstanding job.

I understand that it can be quite a struggle to build and keep routines. We are all busy, and have a lot on our plates. The point isn’t perfection, but to work towards improvement and always put our kids and their development first.
