LeadWorthy is an essential class for all 6th-grade students at Ash Fork Schools, dedicated to leadership and character education that empowers students to lead with purpose and compassion. One of the standout experiences in LeadWorthy is delivering speeches. Students often recall the excitement and nervousness that accompany their first presentation.

While speaking in front of peers can be daunting, the initial nerves quickly transform into a powerful opportunity to showcase their skills. Students are given ample time to organize their thoughts using graphic organizers and prepare with index cards, setting them up for success.

During their presentations, two supportive classmates sit beside them, creating a positive atmosphere. The speech rubric focuses on key elements such as posture, eye contact, timing, tone of voice, and overall completion of the speech. After each presentation, students receive affirmations and constructive feedback that highlights areas for growth, ensuring they are equipped to build on their successes and improve each time. This process instills a sense of confidence and empowerment.

As Luke confidently stated, “Practicing speeches fosters essential social interactions for future jobs and business opportunities.” Layla echoed this sentiment, saying, “It prepares you so that if you need to give a speech for a job, you know exactly what to do.” Mark pointed out, “If you aspire to be president, mastering the art of delivering speeches is vital to your success.” Furthermore, Davian emphasized, “When it’s time to give a speech, you’ll know to plan and practice in advance, which will eliminate any fear of public speaking.”

Power Yoga Comes to Ash Fork High School

This quarter, Ash Fork High School introduced its very first Power Yoga class, taught by English teacher Staci Martin. Ms. Martin, who has been teaching high school English for 11 years, also holds advanced yoga certifications, including a 200-hour certificate earned in Tucson, Arizona (2014) and a 500-hour certificate earned in Kathmandu, Nepal (2018).

Power Yoga is a dynamic, strength-based style of yoga that builds stamina, flexibility, and focus. Recently, the class has also been exploring Yin Yoga, a slower-paced style focused on stretching connective tissues and cultivating patience. Together, these practices provide both challenge and calm for students.

The class meets every Monday and Wednesday, earning students PE credit while also giving them the opportunity to graduate with a yoga teaching certificate—a credential typically valued at around $3,000.
For many students, yoga is more than just exercise. Arlette S. shared, “I always look forward to yoga; it has helped me with stress and sports!” Eva A. added, “Yoga is my favorite because it helps me relax from all the stressful college classes I am taking.”

Others emphasized the mental benefits. Gabby G. explained, “Yoga helps me be stress-free because it releases the tension I have accumulated throughout the week.” And Laney T. described it as a personal retreat: “Yoga helps me because it’s a time when I don’t have to be anyone or think of anything; I can just breathe and relax in this space.”

With Power Yoga now part of the curriculum, Ash Fork students are discovering a practice that builds strength, stillness, and self-confidence—skills that extend far beyond the yoga mat.

Board Meeting Announcement
Today at 10:55 AM, Ash Fork Schools initiated a soft lockdown after receiving a report of an individual with a machete on Park Avenue. Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement confirmed that the individual was no longer a threat, and at that point, we lifted the lockdown.

At no time were students or staff in danger. The safety of our students is always our top priority, and we appreciate your support and understanding.
