Welded Flowers

For the second quarter of this year in welding, we have been working on becoming OSHA 10 certified. The process for the OSHA 10 Certification is a minimum of 10 hours of interactive training videos followed by an exit exam. Once completed, you receive your OSHA card, which is valid in every state for future employment.

After students received their certification, they moved on to some holiday crafting. The students were told to pick an employee of the district and create a metal Christmas gift. Most used donated horseshoes to make snowmen, reindeer, elves, and penguins. The students learned a lot about dealing with challenging angles and how to see what they were making in their heads when they had a pile of horseshoes in their hands.

We also worked on making metal planes, cars, tractors, semi-trucks, and a boat. These were crafted using sheet metal as well as nuts and bolts. The creativity was great, and the ability to weld thin gage metal was a good learning opportunity for the students.

By the end of this quarter, we learned about welding different metal gages and different joints and fitments. The students are even more aware of safety in the shop after taking the OSHA 10 course and how it can apply to their lives at home or work. Finally, we spread Christmas cheer by making the school more festive with their crafts.
