This year in our filmmaking class has been one of the most exciting yet. Every year the group feels like it grows, not just in numbers but in talent, effort, and creativity. We have been lucky enough to get new technology, but as we have learned, equipment alone does not make a good film. What really matters is the energy students put into their projects and the knowledge they pick up early on about the basics of storytelling and filmmaking.
Independent filmmaking is all about making the most out of what you have, and I see that same spirit in our class. From learning how to frame a shot to working together on projects, it is the effort and collaboration that make things stand out. So far, the results have been pretty exceptional. That does not mean we do not face challenges, but those challenges are what push us to grow. Every obstacle turns into a lesson, and every lesson makes us stronger as filmmakers.
Overall, this year feels like a big step forward. The students are not only learning the craft but also learning what it takes to work in a creative field: patience, teamwork, and persistence. Another new part of our journey is integrating AI into our process. At first we were skeptical, but we have come to see it as a tool rather than something that does all of the work for us. Used the right way, it helps us improve and strengthen our stories. I'm excited for what the future holds for us at Sparta Studios, our newly found production name for the Ash Fork Unified School District.
Sincerely,
Cris Acosta
