This quarter in middle school, we have established an AIR (Accountable Independent Reading) period from 2:15-2:45. During this time, students read a book of their choice for 15 minutes, and then reflect on what they have read for 10 minutes. AIR provides students with the opportunity to read what interests them, helping them build reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and inferencing skills. AIR also helps students practice how to read for exams, in college, and in their daily lives. However, the downside to AIR is that it can occur with low accountability. Or in other words, students are only pretending to read, but are not actually reading. To demonstrate accountability, students complete a daily reflection sheet worth 10 points, which counts toward the reteach and intervention grades. To increase transparency for parents, I have included a picture of the rubric and a sample of a full-credit response. My goal is for these samples to help you understand the expectations set for your child at this time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Broehm
